01 / Overview
For generations, puttu podi and roasted coconut have been made in a wide, shallow uruli stirred by hand over a fire. The Uruli Roaster (LPG) keeps that shape and puts a motor on the stirring.
An LPG burner sits in an enclosed cabinet under a round stainless pan. The flame heats the pan directly and can be turned up or down. Stirrer arms driven from a post above the pan keep the batch moving so nothing catches on the hot base. The electric supply runs that stirrer; the heat is gas.
Small and medium rice powder units, flour mills that roast for customers and ayurvedic makers buy it, in sizes from 10KG to 175KG. It sits after pulverising and before the sifter, in the same place as the larger steam and electric roasters.
02 / Construction & use
Features
- Round stainless pan keeps the wide, shallow shape of the traditional uruli.
- LPG burner in an enclosed cabinet below heats the pan directly.
- Adjustable flame lets the operator raise or lower heat as the batch changes.
- Motorised stirrer arms on a top post turn the batch so it does not catch.
- Gas lights quickly, with no smoke or ash to clear before the next batch.
Used to make
- Puttu podi and idiyappam podi roasted in small mills
- Rava and vermicelli roasting
- Coconut roasted for chammanthi podi
- Spices, peanuts and gram
- Churna ingredients and small lehyam batches
03 / Choosing
- Firewood Roaster
The Firewood Roaster has the same pan-and-stirrer idea but burns wood. Pick LPG for a clean start, no ash and an adjustable flame; pick firewood where wood or coconut waste is cheap and smoke is acceptable.
- Steam Roaster
The Steam Roaster avoids a naked flame and reaches far larger batches, but it needs a boiler. Take this LPG roaster for smaller batches when there is no boiler and the electrical load must stay low.
04 / Questions
Why is three-phase power listed for a gas Uruli Roaster?
The stirrer motor is electric. The heat comes from LPG. The listed 440V three-phase AC is the motor supply, so if your site lacks three-phase power, tell us and we will advise on the motor.
Should I choose the LPG Uruli Roaster over a firewood one?
LPG is cleaner, starts quickly and responds to the burner control. Firewood has the lower fuel cost where wood is plentiful. Weigh your fuel supply, kitchen layout and smoke tolerance before you decide between the two roasters.
Can the Uruli Roaster roast coconut and spices as well as rice powder?
The open pan and stirrer suit most dry roasting, including grated coconut, spices, peanuts and gram. Oily products such as coconut stick if left still, so keep the arms turning, and clean the pan between products.
